Beginning of the refurbishment works of the chapter house of the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Montefaro (Ares, A Coruña)

The refurbishment works of the chapter house of the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Montefaro began in September with the purpose of creating an interpretation and exhibition space for the complex.

As requested by the Ministry of Culture, Education and University Organization of the Xunta de Galicia, our team has developed the basic and execution project. Starting from a tight budget, the intervention aimed to recover the original configuration of the access to the temple, with a previous chapter house to the nave. It will also have an exhibition of sculptural and architectural pieces that are part of the original Gothic portal.

The actuations will make it possible to understand the Church from its Gothic origin, as well as the Baroque reform, and the military reform of the late nineteenth century - early twentieth century.

The access through the original door of the church is therefore recovered, the entrance is made accessible and sculptural materials are recovered. These last ones are now exhibited, like the wild boar that is currently outside.

The project includes also an illumination that recreates the original ribbed vault, explanatory panels and various conservation works in murals and altarpiece.
