THE CASE OF THE CULTURAL EUROPEAN ROUTE OF HISTORIC THERMAL TOWNS: Thermal Tourism as Heritage Creator

Subject: Thermalism

Sponsors: Crecente Asociados

Thermal Towns named by the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA), originally including the cities of Vichy, Spa, Bath, Acquiterme, Salsomaggiore and Ourense. European Thermal Tourism may be conceptualised as the predecessor of the current touristic sector, and it significantly contributes to a sustainable and competitive Tourism through the decentralisation of the offer, the de-seasonalisation and the quality job creation in small and medium-sized enterprises that revitalise the territory. Continental thermalism, based on natural (water, peloids, etc.) and cultural (traditions and thermal medicine) resources, creates high-value architectural and urban spaces that have nowadays been constituted as European Spa Heritage and are transferred to other disciplines, such as literature, painting or music.

Description: We introduce the Cultural European Route of Historic Thermal Towns designed by the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA), originally including the cities of Vichy, Spa, Bath, Acquiterme, Salsomaggiore and Ourense.
