First European Forum of World Heritage Site Managers

Mario Crecente represented the nomination of Ribeira Sacra Waterscape to the World Heritage List at the First European Forum of World Heritage Site Managers held from 22 to 25 April at the Alhambra of Granada and organized by the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites, in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Patronato de la Alhambra and the European Network of World Heritage Site Associations.

Mario Crecente was part of the thematic group “Climate change challenges and risks”, coordinated by Alfred DeGeemis, IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas Vice Chair for World Heritage, and José María Lanzarote, from the Ministry of Culture of Spain. During his intervention he presented the case of Ribeira Sacra and its specifics challenges related to the climate and participated in the exchange of experiences with other attendees.

The various contributions of the participants allowed the sharing of the measurable effects of climate change on World Heritage properties, identifying effects that can be envisaged, as well as lines of research on that subject and their possible applications in management and planning. All the workshops contributed to the final conclusions published by the Alliance.
