Refurbishment works of the Cabildo for Interpretation Hall of the Monastery of Santa Catarina de Montefaro in Ares (A Coruña)

Field of Action: Monastery of Santa Catarina de Montefaro

Customer: Galician Ministry of Culture, Education and University Planning

Subject: Restoration.

Description:

In December 2018 the refurbishment works of the Cabildo of the Monastery of Santa Catarina de Montefaro were finished. This building will house the Interpretation Centrel of the complex, which will be known as "Cabido de Montefaro".

As requested by the Ministry of Culture, Education and University Organization of the Xunta de Galicia, our team has developed the basic and execution project. Starting from a tight budget, the intervention aimed to recover the original configuration of the access to the temple, with a previous chapter house to the nave. It also has an exhibition of sculptural and architectural pieces that are part of the original Romanesque portal.

The actuations will make it possible to understand the Church from its Medieval origin, as well as the Baroque reform, and the military reform of the late nineteenth century - early twentieth century. The access through the original door of the church is therefore recovered, the entrance is made accessible and sculptural materials are recovered. These last ones are now exhibited, like the wild boar that is currently outside.

The project includes also an illumination that recreates the original ribbed vault, explanatory panels and various conservation works in murals and altarpiece.

We hope that the result helps the visitor to better understand the history of the place and the evolution of the church from its Medieval origin to the military reform of the late nineteenth century - early twentieth century. Besides, the visitor will know some of the pieces that made up the old Romanesque portal.
