Description:

The target of this study was to analyse the carrying capacity of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, Peru. This project, commissioned by the World Tourism Organization, tries to guide the Sanctuary management, main touristic resource of the country, exposed to the pressure generated by the increase in touristic demand and the special conditions of this complex, the setting, and its accessibility. It was developed in collaboration with several involved public and private agents, with meetings in Madrid, Lima, Cusco, and the very same Sanctuary. It suggested direct action measures to improve the complex management and a long-term strategy based on a geographical information system.
