Field of Action: Galician coast

Customer: Independent project. Founded by the Galician Ministry of Innovation and Industry. Xunta de Galicia

Subject: Investigation

Description:

The investigation project LA TALASOTERAPIA COMO MOTOR DE DESARROLLOSOSTENIBLE PARA GALICIA (Thalassotherapy as a Sustainable Development Engine for Galicia) suggests a new economic development model for the Galician coast, starting with main marine resources of the coast, local population knowledge and reuse of old abandoned facilities of heritage interest —such as canning, salting and whaling premises— that makes the Galician touristic offer special as an Atlantic destination and as the end of the Way of Saint James, all supported by the current relevance of its THERMAL SECTOR.

We started from a study on different models of thalassotherapy in the world, in Europe and in Spain, and their future trends; quality analysis of water, seaweed, sand and Galician sea peloids; history of "weave baths" in Galicia; and study on the complex administrative and competency legal framework of the coast setting.

The main part of the investigation included an exhaustive and detailed study on the Galician coast (1,740 km/1,080 miles long) reflected on a specific geographical information system that analyses the basic parameters that define the location suitability: RESOURCES (water quality, slimes, intertidal, etc.), SETTING (infrastructures, equipment, impacts, etc.), ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (landscaping, sunbathing, habitats, etc.), LAW (urban planning, Red Natura, coasts, etc.), CONTAINERS (heritage, state, access or sea, surface, etc.), IMPACT (business parks, aquatic farms, rivers, ports, etc.), about 211 places.

Based on this, a multicriteria evaluation method called EVAMIX, that allows for integration of qualitative and quantitative criteria, was applied. This technique was implemented with DEFINITE software. As a result of this process, the best locations for the development of this new model of Thalassotherapy in Galicia were selected: 18 fields, which may be selected to be carried out depending on opportunity or viability criteria.

At the same time, it proposes a MANAGEMENT PROCESS or action plans that allows for coordination competencies of different administrations, the role of public and private agents, and actions to be performed in order to achieve the project implementation.
